S1 & S2 Accelerated Reader Programme

30 September

This year we will be delivering the Accelerated Reader programme with all S1 & S2 pupils. Literacy is an invaluable skill across the entire school curriculum and beyond, and the best way to increase literacy is to read widely and often.

At the beginning of S1, pupils will be given their login details for Accelerated Reader and will sit a test that measures their reading age and provides a suitable book level. They will then be able to look for a book in our school library that matches that level. Of course, if they want to read their own, that is no problem at all - they can use www.arbookfind.co.uk to check the level of their chosen book.

It is recommended that pupils read for 20-30 minutes a day. Time will be given during English lessons each week to read but we appreciate your support in encouraging your child to read at home. This will be their English homework for the year.

When a book is finished, pupils should log on to the Accelerated Reader website, and complete a Quiz on that book that will measure their progress throughout the year. This should be done within 48 hours of finishing the book. Where possible, class teachers will allow this to take place in school, but it is much more likely that this will need to be done at home, and so we appreciate your help in encouraging your child to do so. Take the quiz here: AR Book Quiz (opens new window)
