Welcome to Our Pupil Council

"It is only through a culture of collegiality and capacity building that improvement can and will be made and we will see improved attainment and outcomes for all our young people. That culture also needs to be ambitious" (Scottish Parliamentary Debate on Education 12/1/12)

"Every child has the right to say what they think in all matters affecting them, and to have their views taken seriously." (Article 12 (respect for the views of the child) UNCRC, UNICEF).

Pupil Council at The James Young High School runs with three representatives from each Pastoral Support Group who meet with other representatives from their year group on a fortnightly basis. Each year group council provides feedback on Teaching and Learning and addresses issues that arise within their year. Representatives from each year council attend termly whole school council meetings to share feedback on Teaching and Learning and issues that run across the years.

Pupils from Pupil Council also have the opportunity to participate in Learning Rounds to further discuss and provide feedback on Teaching and Learning in our school. Senior pupils also attend West Lothian Youth Congress to represent our pupils' views at council level.

Representatives for each year's council are elected and trained in June and are expected to carry out their duties for the whole term. S1 pupils are elected and trained in the first few weeks of the new term.
