Confucius Immersion Trip 2019

During the summer holiday ten students from West Lothian attended the Confucius Institute for Scottish Schools Summer Immersion Trip.

Sarah , Erica , Nathan , Glen, Gemma  and Isaac  from The James Young High School were among the 123 students from across Scotland selected to attend the Confucius Institute for Scotland's Schools Summer Immersion Camp in July 2019.

The experience was mainly funded by the Confucius Institute for Scotland's School, a joint Scottish and Chinese government initiative which allowed the group to travel to Beijing and Tianjin to learn about Chinese culture and study Intensive Mandarin. The students were accompanied by teacher Graham Henderson from The James Young High School.

During the trip students experienced Chinese culture and visited attractions including the Great Wall, Beijing Olympic Stadium, the Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Tiananmen Square and the Pearl Market. They then travelled to Tianjin and worked with Chinese students from our link school, Tianjin No. 41 High School, to learn Mandarin. Students met with host families and experience traditional Chinese cultures such as a tea ceremony, a river cruise in Tianjin and a visit to Ancient Culture Street. Throughout the trip students tried many different foods as well.

All students on the trip were excellent ambassadors for West Lothian and the trip has allowed us to develop stronger links with Tianjin No. 41 High School to create greater opportunities to further develop Mandarin within our schools. All students gained an SQA Bridge Award in Mandarin from the work they completed on their trip.
