West Lothian School Health Service
Children's well-being depends on meeting their emotional, physical and intellectual needs. Children do better at school if they are both healthy and happy. The School Health Service helps children achieve their full potential. Every school in West Lothian has a named Community Paediatrician and a fully qualified School Nurse with relevant training to meet the needs of the child. The Nurse and the Doctor visit the school regularly.
What does the School Health Service Do?
- It works as part of the integrated community school, multidisciplinary team along with other agencies promoting children's welfare. It works closely with schools to encourage and assist them to become new Health Promoting Schools.
- Children with health related problems will be reviewed by the School Nurse or Doctor. Children can also be offered an appointment at the request of parents, school staff or other health professionals.
- The School Nurse is involved in Health Education classes and events within school.It provides advice on health issues to parents, teachers, and children and where appropriate, assists in planning the curriculum for Health Education
At The James Young High School
- The School Health Service is available for pupils seeking individual advice via staff or drop-in clinics on a Wednesday morning
- In S2/3 pupils will be given a Health Questionnaire to complete and will be offered an appointment with the School Nurse or Doctor if appropriate
Immunisations
All S1 pupils will be offered HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) vaccination. Only pupils who are immunosuppressed require more than one dose. This is usually given between April and June each year.
MMR ( Measles, Mumps and Rubella) is also offered to pupils who may have missed a dose or may not have received any as a younger child. This is usually offered between April and June.
Teenage Immunisations are offered in S3 to all pupils. This is a booster dose of Diptheria/Tetanus/Polio and a one off dose of Meningitis ACWY. This is usually given between January and March.
The Flu Vaccine is offered between September and December each year for all high school pupils. This is generally given as a nasal spray but can also be given as an injection if requested.
