JYHS Brass Band

The JYHS Brass Band allows brass musicians from S2 to S6 to perform together as a band. The band takes part in a number of school concerts throughout the year providing brass students with invaluable experience. From time to time the Brass Band is also entered into competitions at the Scottish Youth Brass Band Festival.

Individual brass students may also take part in solo and ensemble competitions both locally and nationally. Over the past few years JYHS has been very successful at these competitions with several of our ensembles winning the national competition to become Scottish champions.

The Brass Band comprises all pupils in S2 to S6 at JYHS who receive brass tuition

Events / Activities

The following events are scheduled for the Brass Band (check the calendar for this year's dates):

Music Camp

Annually in October

Members of the Brass Band rehearse at the annual weekend music camp at the Broomlee Centre in West Linton. This is a good opportunity for band members to improve their performance and mix socially with all the other music students at JYHS.

Scottish Youth Brass Band Festival

Annually in November

The Brass Band may take part in the Scottish Youth Brass Band Festival in Perth.

SBBA Solo and Ensemble Championships

Annually in November (East of Scotland heat) and February (finals)

Individual brass musicians are invited to take part in the Scottish Brass Band Association's Solos and Ensembles Championships. If they are successfully placed in the top three positions they progress to the finals.

JYHS Christmas Concert

Annually in December

The brass band usually takes part in the evening performance of the JYHS Christmas Concert. This is an excellent opportunity for parents and family to watch the band play in a relaxed and festive concert. Tickets can be purchased in advance from the JYHS school office.

JYHS Brass Concert

Annually in February/March

The Brass Band usually has its own concert for family and friends to attend. This concert is typically a very relaxed and enjoyable occasion providing the opportunity for many of the brass students to perform solos or as part of ensembles.

JYHS Summer Concert

Annually in June

This is an annual concert for parents and family and an opportunity to say farewell to S6 pupils. The brass band usually performs at this concert allowing family and friends to see the fantastic progress made by the band since the start of the school year. Tickets can be purchased in advance from the JYHS school office.
